Former Utah Sen. Jake Garn to be honored with art tribute on Saturday

SALT LAKE CITY — Former Utah astronaut and U.S. Senator Jake Garn will be honored Saturday at Salt Lake City International Airport with an art installation tribute.
The ceremony will include a legacy tribute video of Garn. Additionally, speakers at the event will include former Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt, Scott Howell, co-chair of the Jake Garn Legacy Team and Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall.
The art installation will honor Garn’s career in aviation, aeronautics and politics. The event will be held in the greeting room on the second floor, beginning at 2:30 p.m.
Garn recently celebrated his 90th birthday. He was born on Oct. 12, 1932, in Richfield, and has seven children, 30 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Garn was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1974 and represented Utah for three terms. In 1985, he was the first member of Congress to fly into space. He served as a payload specialist on the space shuttle Discovery.
