Marriage rates rising, divorces decreasing nationally

In 2022, the United States witnessed a significant uptick in the number of marriages, reaching a total of 2,065,905[1]. This marked the first instance of surpassing the 2 million mark since 2019 when the figure stood at 2,015,603, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

SALT LAKE CITY — The number of marriages across the U.S. has returned to pre-pandemic levels with 2022 showing the highest marriage rate since 2019.
According to data from the CDC, there was a total of 2,065,905 marriages in 2022. The first time since 2019, when there were 2,015,603 marriages, that U.S. marriages rose above 2 million.
The national marriage rate itself increased to 6.2 marriages per 1,000 people, which is the highest rate since 2018.
Utah was among the 5 states with the highest marriage rates with 9.9 marriages per 1,000 people.
The top 5 states with the highest marriage rates in 2022 were:
- Nevada (25.9)
- Hawaii (14.4)
- Montana (9.9)
- Utah (9.9)
- Arkansas (7.9)
The CDC reports that 36 states plus the District of Columbia had 2022 marriage rates that were at or above the levels recorded in 2019. Twelve states, on the other hand, saw a decrease in their marriage rates in 2o22.
There was also a decrease in the number and rate of national divorces in 2022, with 673,989 divorces and a rate of 2.4 per 1,000 people. These numbers are consistent with the trend of decreasing divorces over the last 20 years.
In 2022, Utah’s divorce rate was just above the national average with 2.9 per 1,000 people. This is a decrease from 3.3 in 2021.
