Nebo School District not at capacity, says official after families raise concern over overcrowding

SALEM — School has only just started for the Nebo School District and families are already frustrated by overcrowding.
Stacey Smith’s says her granddaughter’s school, Salem Elementary, is already overcrowded and is surprised there aren’t any plans to alleviate that despite large housing developments underway in the area.
“The pick up and drop off lines are crowded, the hallways are crowded, the cafeteria is crowded. I mean the whole situation in our school is very crowded,” said Smith.
She says there isn’t even room for kids to sit around their teacher and that the classroom environment can be crazy with over 30 kids.
“It’s just too crowded,” said Smith.
But Nebo School District Public Information Officer, Seth Sorensen, says it’s not a worry of theirs
“We actually at this moment don’t have any of our schools that are at capacity. And the state gives us a formula to help determine that capacity,” said Sorensen.
However, they’ve had to build several high schools because of the growth.
Sorensen says if the elementary schools get too full because of the growth, they can always re-draw boundaries to balance it out.
