SPANISH FORK — A person stopped on Interstate 15 in Spanish Fork to check on someone who had been in a crash Saturday morning. While out of their car, another vehicle hit them.

Sgt. Mike Gordon with the Utah Highway Patrol said a separate accident caused a vehicle to veer and hit the pedestrian on the side of the freeway at approximately 9:15 a.m. Gordon said the pedestrian survived with serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.

The Utah Department of Transportation said the accident occurred on the southbound side of the freeway at mile post 257 near Main Street, causing lane closures in the area that had been cleared by noon.

Police did not release any details about the victim. Gordon said nobody else was hospitalized in the crash.

Gordon applauded the good Samaritan’s heroic intentions, while noting that the freeway is a dangerous place.

“If you do have a concern we just ask that you call 911 have officers or troopers deal with the incident so we don’t have people put in unfortunate situations like this and then have this unfortunate outcome,” he said.

The other drivers involved stayed on the scene and cooperated with police.

KSL TV has been in contact with the victim’s family — they are not sharing additional information at this time. Gordon said the investigation is ongoing.

Utah Highway Patrol reminds drivers to be careful on the roads, especially in inclement weather.

“We’re still not out of winter yet, so we just need people to slow down and continue to pay attention,” Gordon said.
