SALT LAKE CITY — Utah’s Olympic delegation to Paris is on its way to make one last pitch to host the 2034 Winter Olympics before the International Olympic Committee.
The airport held a party of Olympic proportions.
Plenty of memorabilia from the 2002 Winter Olympics filled the room, along with a cake the shape of a mountain with a little skier.
Governor Spencer Cox is part of the group going to Paris.
“We’re prepared to give the best presentation possible,” Cox said. “We are excited for that vote. We’re confident that the IOC is going to vote in favor of Salt Lake City and Utah in 2034 and we’re going to make you proud.”
He went on to say that the upcoming games will take a lot of hard work from the people in Utah.
“Now we have to do the work. And that means all of us pulling together to make this state the best possible version of itself over the next 10 years.”
Made possible by the people of Utah
SLC 2034 President and CEO Fraser Bullock says he was hopeful years ago that Utah would be able to host another games.
“I just didn’t know when,” Bullock said, “And the key to it all was just put your head down and work and over time you’ll figure it out.”
Bullock also says he’s grateful for all the support to get to this point.
“We only can get this award because of the support of the people from Utah. So they should celebrate the award, but they should look in the mirror and say ‘we did it together; Team Utah.’”
The Olympic delegation will present their plans to the full IOC Board Wednesday morning.
The board’s vote and decision will air on KSL NewsRadio starting at 3 a.m. Wednesday.
