GRANTSVILLE, Utah — A Grantsville family is devastated after they say a temporary grave marker was stolen from the city cemetery over the weekend.

Necole Anderson was visiting her late husband’s graveside on Sunday when she discovered the ceramic square tile they had made with her husband Chip’s picture and date of his death on it was missing.

Anderson says she visits the cemetery at least twice a week visiting both her late husband and her 9-year-old daughter who died in an ATV crash four years ago.

“Our family spends a lot of time here,” Anderson told KSL. “I pulled up and got my granddaughters out of the truck. They stood over his grave and cried, ‘Where is grandpa?’ That’s when I realized it was gone. The marker was gone.”

The couple would have been celebrating their 18th anniversary later this month and Anderson says.

“Cemeteries are sacred,” she says. “Why would someone do this to Chip? I just don’t understand how someone could be so cruel and mean.”

The Grantsville Cemetery has an ordinance that requires all burial sites to be marked and Anderson is worried that if they have another one installed that the thieves will come back.

“All I want is for him to be at peace. I wish people would leave him alone.”

We want to hear from you.
