Read Across America Day

Feb 10, 2021, 10:34 PM | Updated: Feb 11, 2021, 1:03 pm

“You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child.” So said Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss. It is clever phrasing for such an important task. Reading to children is one of the best things we can do to help them get on and stay on a path to a successful life.

United Way of Salt Lake’s annual Read Across America Day during the first week of March to celebrate the love for reading. Throughout the week, communities will virtually come together to volunteer and provide in-kind donations to promote the value of reading and literacy in our schools.

As the pandemic has continued to exacerbate barriers to learning, students are especially in need of your support this year. United Way partners with schools across Salt Lake and Davis counties, engaging hundreds of volunteers and providing new books to students. This year, volunteers are invited to participate virtually to support literacy through in-kind donations, tutoring opportunities, and virtual projects.

If you’re interested in virtually volunteering, please click here.  Volunteer opportunities include leading activities or reading with elementary students over video chat.

If you would prefer to donate funds to purchase books, please click here.

You can also donate books directly through these schools’ Amazon Wish Lists:

We want to hear from you.
