Deputy Chief Eric Young, with the Ogden Police Department, says officers initially responded to a reported break-in at a repair shop. He says upon arrival, a female officer entered the building alone and encountered a man inside. The man is believed to be in his 30’s and possibly homeless.
According to Young, the officer issued commands to the suspect, although they were ignored. At that time, the officer exited the building and the suspect attempted to attack her with an unknown item in his hand.
The officer is believed to have fired two rounds at the suspect, which may have hit him in the arm and chest. Officers say they placed the suspect into custody and provided medical treatment prior to paramedics arriving. The suspect was later transported to Ogden Regional Medical Center and is currently in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries.
No officers were injured in the incident. The officer that fired her weapon at the suspect will be placed on paid administrative leave.
“This is a tragedy for our police officers,” says Deputy Chief Young. “And we’ve had far too many of these tragedies in the past few years.”
