SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department will host a gun buy-back program on Saturday, March 25.

The event will be held at the Public Safety Building, located at 475 S. 300 East, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The police department will have gift cards to offer to those who wish to turn in their weapons. It is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

A $50 gift card will be offered for firearms that are turned in. A $100 gift will be offered for any assault-style weapons that are turned in. These are similar to AK-47 and AR-15 model weapons.

Police say only one gift card will be issued per person, no matter how many weapons they are turning in.

Additionally, police say no identification is required and no questions will be asked about the firearms being turned in.

What to do if you are coming to the gun buy-back

Police say anyone bringing a weapon to the event should do the following.

  • The firearm should be unloaded.
  • Store the firearm inside a safe container like a gunlock box. It should also be stored away from the driver or another occupant.
  • If you’re unsure if the weapon is loaded or not, communicate that to the law enforcement personnel on scene. Also tell them where the gun is located.
  • Be patient. The process may take longer for some people if they have more than one weapon, ammunition, or if the firearm needs to be secured by police.
  • Never exit your vehicle with your weapon unless you are specifically requested to do so.

If you are unable to attend the event, but would like to turn in your weapon, you are asked to call Salt Lake City Police at 801-799-3000.
