WEBER COUNTY, Utah — Tubing, kayaking or rafting along the Weber River this summer may be more dangerous because of the water running high and fast under the Croydon bridge.
Located near the Croydon area, the bridge is completely blocking the popular route.
Kyle Hooker, the owner of Barefoot Tubing, has offered tours of the river for 27 years. He says over 60,000 people recreate on the river every year.
“I get nervous when people are getting on the river who don’t know how to maneuver their craft very good, and there’s a big bridge that’s blocking the entire river,” said Hooker.
Hooker plans on putting a guide near the bridge to help his clients exit the river and walk around it. But he’s worried about the thousands of people who run the river without a guide — and who may not exit in time before the current takes them directly into the bridge.
“I’m worried that people will get sucked into the bridge and it’s really quite dangerous,” said Hooker.
There are warning signs around the area. Hooker recommends when floating the river, get out as soon as the bridge is in sight and walk around it.
The Weber River can be extreme for tubing and challenging for inexperienced people on the river.
The bridge is temporary but will be there until the fall. A permanent bridge will be built in its place at a later date.
