SALT LAKE CITY — Former Utah Rep. Becky Edwards, R-Utah, announced Thursday that she had gathered enough signatures to qualify for the special election to replace Congressman Chris Stewart.
According to Edwards, she’s gathered over 7,000 signatures, which is the amount required to qualify. Edwards submitted the signatures Thursday morning.
“Verified Republican signatures to put my name on the Republican ballot,” Edwards told KSL NewsRadio’s Lindsay Aerts as she carried in boxes of signatures.

The state elections office still has to verify her signatures before she’s officially on the ballot.
Edwards also told KSL NewsRadio she would continue to collect signatures throughout the weekend.
“It’s a great time to do it, we’re celebrating independence day. And it’s a great time for us to also celebrate our right to vote in this great country we live in.”
In a Tweet, Edwards added that the signatures collected over the weekend would help create “a healthy buffer as signatures get verified.”
After being verified, Edwards will become the second Republican candidate in the running for Stewart’s seat.
GOP delegates nominated Celeste Maloy, Stewart’s chief legal counsel, to the ballot over the weekend.
