SALT LAKE COUNTY — Search and Rescue teams recovered the body of a Labrador retriever on the Grandeur Peak Trail Tuesday after rescue officials said both the dog and the owner ran out of water.
The Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue released the information in a Facebook post on Wednesday night, which said the hiker and the lab made it to the summit of Grandeur Peak, but about 20 minutes into the downhill stretch, they had to step off into the shade.
The SAR team said at this point, the dog could not keep going.
“The hiker had no water at this time, and it’s unknown how much, if any water, was taken on the hike,” the post said.
SAR said the dog passed away on the mountain. After the dog died, the owner hiked back down to the trailhead.
From the trailhead off of Wasatch Blvd, the hike is a little over two miles one-way to the peak, according to Google Maps. However there is at least one other route, and it’s unclear which trailhead the hiker went back to.
SAR said the call about the dog came in around 2:15 p.m. Tuesday.
After several searches, crews eventually found the dog dead near the area the owner directed them to.
National Weather Service Meteorologists have previously told KSL NewsRadio, not only should people pack plenty of water when it’s hot, they should hydrate beforehand and avoid strenuous activity during excessive heat.
