SALT LAKE CITY – Everyone says that yoga’s good for you, but why? What are the physical and mental health benefits that come with doing yoga?
In the latest Let’s Get Moving with Maria podcast episode, Maria Shilaos spoke with Jane Kilian, Beginners Yoga Teacher and Personal Trainer, to learn why yoga is a form of exercise and how it can help boost self-love.
Kilian’s passion for yoga started with resistance. However, she came to love it after taking a few classes and experiencing that calm and healing energy. She realized that’s where she can focus on herself and be in the present.
“Instead of being a body thing for me, it became a mind thing,” she said. “I got addicted to that peace and stillness even though it’s the opposite of what I thought I wanted and who I am.”
Kilian wanted to focus on beginners because she noticed that most people do want to start yoga, but they’re either intimidated or not sure where to start. For those who feel hesitant on starting, she says there’s no need to worry because it only feels bigger than it actually is.
What’s also great about it is that it can count as a form of exercise.
“When you’re doing yoga, you are feeling the burn… You are working your muscles,” Kilian said.
On the other hand, it can also be a work-in. What this means is that it trains your mind to focus and let go of control. Therefore, it’s beneficial both physically and mentally.
