SALT LAKE CITY – Whether you’re grocery shopping for a big family or for yourself only, there are smarter ways to do it. If you have questions regarding canned vegetables, frozen meals, or even organic items, this one’s for you.

In the latest Let’s Get Moving with Maria podcast episode, Maria Shilaos spoke with Alix Turoff, Registered Dietitian and Co-Founder of Dietitian Business Collective, to learn some of her tips on grocery shopping to eat healthy.

“I always recommend going into the grocery store knowing what you’re going to buy,” Turoff said.

There are many reasons why you should go with a grocery list. One is that it saves money. Another is that it helps keep track of what you picked up.

As you’re putting together a list, it helps to think about how often you go grocery shopping, how much food you make in a typical week and which section to start.

“When you’re building your plate, I like to start with focusing on protein as the star … One great way to do that is to look at what’s on sale at your store,” Turoff said.

Once you have your protein figured out, then you can build your meals around that.

“The other star of the plate is going to be some sort of carbohydrate serving,” Turoff said. “Ideally it’s going to be a high-fiber carb like a sweet potato or a grain or a bean.”

Another thing to think about is your snacking habits. Instead of buying a bunch of different snacks you enjoy eating, try grabbing some fruit and a side to go with it like string cheese or whole grain crackers with spread. This can be your smart afternoon snack, and then you can include a fun snack to enjoy throughout the week.
