GRAND CANYON, Ariz. — Officials at Grand Canyon National Park say a 55-year-old man from Viriginia died at the park on Saturday.

According to a news release, Ranjith Varma, of Manassas, Virginia, was attempting to hike from the South to the North Rim in the same day.

The release further states that park officials received notification of a hiker in distress on the North Kaibab Trail approximately 1 mile south of Cottonwood Campground around 1:55 p.m.

The hiker then became unresponsive. Other hikers then began CPR on the hiker. However, those attempts were unsuccessful.

Park officials remind park visitors that during the summer months certain parts of the trail can reach 120 degrees. Additionally, park officials also encourage visitors to not hike the inner canyon during the heat of the day between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
