SALT LAKE CITY — Some Utah lawmakers have proposed a resolution condemning communism and socialism.
According to Rep. Trevor Lee, R- Salt Lake City, it’s part of this year’s legislative session to combat any ideals leaning in that direction.
Lee says people’s liberties have already been threatened in Utah and America, so having this resolution as part of Utah law is necessary.
“What we’re seeing is a massive increase of people who are trying to bring back principles and policies that are communistic or very socialistic-like,” said Lee.
Lee provided Venezuela as an example of why we should be actively fighting against these ideals.
“[The people of Venezuela are] barely able to feed themselves and it started with the government taking over institutions,” said Lee.
The representative said things like censorship and the loss of personal liberties have seeped into our lives.
If the resolution passes, Lee hopes to have refugees from communist countries in the audience. Lee is the House sponsor of the resolution.
The resolution will first be presented to the Senate. The resolution has yet to go before a committee.
