SALT LAKE CITY — If you live on a small property, it can be challenging to build a nice, substantial garden for yourself. To help you make the most out of your limited space, Horticulturist Sheriden Hansen joined the KSL Greenhouse show with some tips for gardening efficiently in small spaces.
The first thing Sheriden wanted you to consider is to only plant what you know you will eat.
“You don’t want to waste one single inch of space on something that you will not like or will not eat,” she said.
After you decide what to plant, the next step is all about spacing. Sheriden suggested using vertical space, more commonly known as trellising.
“Everything that can climb, including squashes, I’m going to push upward so that I can save that space. And I use things that are relatively inexpensive,” she said.
One of the tools that she uses for trellising is something called a cattle panel, which you can get at local farm stores. You will need a couple of T-posts and zip ties.
“They’re usually about 16 feet long. You can bend them up and over a walkway, or you can use them straight down a row… Then I will trellis or push all of those vegetables upward as much as I can,” Sheriden said.
Other ways you can save space include placing containers wherever you see open and a process called interplanting.
The KSL Greenhouse is on every Saturday from 8 a.m.-11 a.m. You can follow the show on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and on our website.
