New Amtrak routes would offer new destinations accessible through SLC

SALT LAKE CITY — The Federal Railroad Administration released a new map for proposed Amtrak routes that will connect major cities across the West, including Salt Lake City.
But at least for now, it’s just an idea. There are reportedly no major plans in the works yet.
“That’s what this process is all about … determining the feasibility and to see if something like this would make sense,” said John Gleason, director of public relations for the Utah Department of Transportation.
Currently, there is just one Amtrak route that goes through Salt Lake City.
Utah officials are optimistic about new Amtrak routes
Gleason said he remains optimistic. He says he’s excited about the possibility of new paths to travel, especially with routes possibly connecting Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Salt Lake City.
Another proposed route travels from Seattle to Denver and includes stops in Utah.
“That’s what we’re interested in, different transportation solutions that provide people with different opportunities,” Gleason said.
UDOT Urban Planning Manager Jordan Backman said if these routes ever become a reality, completion would be many years down the track.
