WEST VALLEY, Utah — West Valley City will soon turn a stormwater detention area into a wetland park for people to enjoy.

The park will be located at 2729 South 6750 West. It will take up 72 acres of wetlands, according to West Valley City.

The wetlands themselves aren’t going anywhere.

West Valley City’s Parks and Recreation Director Jamie Young said the new park will include walking and horseback riding trails. It’ll also feature a barn and equestrian arena.

Along with preserving the acreage, it’ll give students at the Granite Technical Institute the opportunity to get hands-on experience with farming and animal classes.

They’ll be able to put their agriculture education to use at the park.

“You know, the educational opportunities don’t end just with the animals that are there but also with the students that have an opportunity to learn valuable life skills as part of this project,” Young said.

The project will cost about $20 million, most of which will come from grants.

Since the grants are providing most of the funding, the timeline is still up in the air. The city said it would take several years to finish.

However, Young said phase one is completely funded and will be open by the end of the year.

“We’re just excited to be able to have that, have people have that access to that area for bird watching or just kind of being in nature even though you’re very much in the middle of the city,” Young said.
