ROY, Utah — Quick action by a school resource officer averted a potentially dangerous situation Thursday at Roy High School. School officials acted on a tip that a student had brought a handgun to school with him.
The School Resource Officer (SRO) and Roy City Police Department responded to reports of a student bringing a handgun on campus. Officials briefly placed Roy High School classes on “hold” status while authorities apprehended the 15-year-old male student and took him out of his classroom.
According to a press release, police found a loaded handgun in the waistband of the student.
After an initial investigation, police said they learned the firearm belonged to the 15-year-old student’s father. The investigation also found that the student had taken the gun from a locked gun safe without his parent’s knowledge.
Police say that this incident may have gang connections, and the student claimed the gun was for protection. He was taken into custody on gun-related charges.
The student is currently booked into Weber Valley Juvenile Detention Center.
The press release also said that the SRO and school officials responded quickly to the tip they received. Responders had both the suspect and the firearm in custody within minutes of receiving the tip.
