Statistics show women do more unpaid work in the home than men

SALT LAKE CITY — Women are more likely to take over unpaid duties like household chores and caring for the elderly, according to a new research snapshot compiled by the Utah Women and Leadership Project.

Director of the project, Susan Madsen, says often things like laundry or checking in on parents and in-laws fall to the women in the family.

“Women tend to do four hours and forty-seven minutes, versus one hour and thirty minutes for men,” Madsen said, adding that the division of labor makes it difficult for women to have any true leisure time.

“If we don’t have space then we’re not as resilient and often times we can slip into depression or unhealthy habits.”

Madsen said the gap is more pronounced in Utah than other states.
