Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill walks reporters through body cam footage of interaction between officers and suspect Michael Glad who was shot and killed May 28, 2018

SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill’s office will not be filing charges against two West Jordan police officers after they shot and killed a robbery suspect in May.

According to Gill, the suspect, Michael Glad, had robbed a 7-Eleven convenience store before an officer stopped him near 6200 S. 4000 W. The officer says Glad had what appeared to be a gun in his hand and refused to drop it after being commanded to do so, as well as pointing the apparent weapon at the officer. Gill says that first officer did everything in his power to talk Glad down.

“I think he generally wanted to de-escalate the situation. You can hear him say it, ‘I don’t want to do this.’ He does not want to be shooting at him. He’s trying to communicate to him that he doesn’t want to be put into a position to fire at him,” says Gill.

After a tense verbal exchange, Glad then jumped into the first officer’s truck and tried to drive away after driving straight for a group of officers. That’s when officers Whitehead and Shepherd fired multiple shots.

“Two go through the windshield, one through the side panel, and one through the side window,” Gill explains.

At least one of the shots struck Glad in the neck, ultimately killing him.

Gill says the officers took appropriate action and his office sees no reason to press charges.

Investigators determined Glad was holding a pellet gun.
