GRANTSVILLE, Utah — Colin Haynie is still trying to process what happened to his family after his wife and three of his children were killed.

“The outpouring of love and support has been overwhelming,” said Haynie, speaking publicly Thursday for the first time since the shooting. “At first this seemed to be a family tragedy, but as time has gone on, it has become very clear that it has affected far more than my family or even the local community.”

Grantsville police say 16-year-old Colin Jeffrey Haynie, or CJ, methodically shot and killed his family members as they came home from school and work Friday, January 17. The elder Colin Haynie was shot and wounded, but survived.

“We appreciate all who have been so generous in giving time and help and resources and making this difficult time less difficult for us,” said Haynie.

The funerals are Friday, January 24 for the mother Consuelo Alejandra Haynie, known as Alex, and 15-year-old Alexis, 14-year-old Matthew and 12-year-old Milan. A viewing is at 10 a.m. followed by the funeral at noon at the Grantsville Stake Center. All four family members will be interred afterward at the Grantsville City Cemetery.

Yellow ribbons lined the streets around the home and the stake center ahead of the planned memorial services for the Grantsville family.

The family’s stake president says the shootings may never be completely understood.

The teenage son is expected to attend his first court appearance on Monday, January 27 on the charges.
