Vigil to be held for 19-year-old who died in wrong-way crash on I-15

SALT LAKE CITY — A vigil will be held for 19-year-old Gwendolyn Doner who died in a wrong-way car crash caused by another driver on the northbound ramp from I-15 to I-215. The ceremony for Doner, who is originally from Casper, Wyoming, will be held at Murray City Park Friday at 8 p.m.
The vigil for the crash victim comes three days after a gray Chevrolet Avalanche intentionally struck a marked Unified Police Department vehicle that was parked of the sub-station located in Cottonwood Heights Monday. Officers engaged in a pursuit of the driver, who then reportedly began to travel in the opposite direction of traffic on the I-15 ramp.
Police say the driver, a 35-year-old male from Cottonwood Heights, struck a Ford Taurus — which Doner was driving — head-on before Jeep Cherokee struck the suspect’s car head-on. The driver then fled the scene on foot before police apprehended him.
The 35-year-old male was booked into Salt Lake County jail on Tuesday, where he is being held without bail as officers investigate whether he was driving under the influence.
The driver of the Jeep Cherokee was treated on the scene, as well as Doner’s passenger. Doner was transported by air ambulance in critical condition but succumbed to injuries sustained from the crash, according to police.
