ROY, Utah — A chain-reaction crash in an I-15 construction zone shut down southbound lanes of Utah’s major thoroughfare for approximately one-half hour on Saturday afternoon.

Utah Highway Patrol (UHP) spokesman, Trooper Colton Freckleton told KSL that a Toyota SUV rear-ended a minivan on southbound I-15 at 5600 South in Roy.

Next after an evasive move to avoid the first crash, another SUV that was pulling a trailer side-swiped the vehicles involved in the first crash.

According to the UHP, that SUV bounced off of the concrete wall surrounding the freeway lanes in that area. At that time, all southbound lanes on I-15 near 5600 South in Roy were shut down.

Two people were hospitalized after the chain-reaction crash with what the UHP described as minor injuries.

In early April, 2021, the Utah Department of Transportation asked I-15 drivers who travel between Roy and Clearfield, to be aware of a freeway split that would impact traffic through the end of 2021.

The construction is part of an ongoing freeway expansion plan to expand the I-15 Express Lanes from Layton Parkway to Riverdale Road. You can read more on the project’s progress at this webpage operated by the Utah Department of Transportation.
