SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — A severe thunderstorm rolled through Salt Lake County Thursday evening, causing a weather delay in the Utah-Weber State season-opening football game at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
The lightning and rain sent both teams to the locker room just before 6 p.m. Thousands of fans also sought shelter from the inclement weather. Per NCAA rules, a game can not resume until 30 minutes after the last lightning strike.
The delay came 30 minutes after the game had kicked off. Weber State was leading Utah 7-3 at the time of the delay.
The game resumed at 7:20 p.m.
Earlier in the evening, the storm had produced nickel-size hail and wind gusts of 50 mph in Tooele County. Once the storm passed by Salt Lake City, it delivered strong winds, rain and hail to portions of Weber and Morgan County.
