SALT LAKE CITY — The man who killed University of Utah football player Aaron Lowe in 2021, and later pleaded guilty, was given the maximum sentence.
Twenty-five-year-old Buk Mawut Buk received a sentence of 15 years to life behind bars for Lowe’s murder. He will spend that time at the Utah State Prison.
Buk shot and killed Lowe at a house party in 2021 during an argument.
Additional second-degree felony charges of obstruction of justice and possession of a weapon were dismissed against Buk in exchange for his guilty pleas.
The 25-year-old also received another three-years-to-life sentence for attempted murder. A 20-year-old woman was shot at the same house party. She survived.
KSL legal analyst Greg Skordas told Jeff Caplan’s Afternoon News he believes Buk will serve a minimum of 18 years. But due to the severity of the crime, Skordas said he doesn’t think Buk will ever get out of prison.
“The Board (of Pardons) will look at him again in five years, 10 years, 15 years, whatever,” Skordas said. “And my guess is they will continue to say ‘sorry we’re not prepared to let you out at this point,'” Skordas said.
