CEDAR CITY, Utah — A Cedar City shooting suspect is recovering in an area hospital after being shot by police Thursday.

According to the Cedar City Police Department, authorities responded to a report of shots fired in the area of the 4200 West block of 375 North at 11:30 a.m.

Information initially provided to police stated that a male had intentionally shot a gun toward a group of people inside a home.

Once authorities arrived on scene, the suspect, identified as 40-year-old Brian Peters, used a firearm to shoot additional rounds.

Peters then came out of the house and was a threat to the officers. Peters was taken into custody, but not before he was shot by authorities. As a result, Peters was transported to a Cedar City hospital for treatment of his injuries.

No information was provided on the status of Peters.

Police say no other injuries were reported in the Cedar City shooting.

During the incident, a elementary school in the area was placed on lockdown, while homes in the area were evacuated. Traffic on SR-56 was also shutdown for a brief time.

The investigation into the incident is still ongoing. The investigation is being conducted
by the Critical Incident Task Force of Iron, Garfield and Beaver counties.

On Friday, Peters  was booked into the Iron County Jail under investigation for attempted murder, a first-degree felony, and felony discharge of a firearm, a third-degree felony.
