UTAH COUNTY, Utah — A 19-year-old woman was safely rescued by Utah County Search and Rescue Sunday evening after being stuck in the mud at Provo Bay for more than two hours.

According to Sgt. Spencer Cannon, of the Utah County Sheriff’s Office, the woman was on the lake with her father around 5:30 p.m. Their boat ended up getting stuck in a body of water that is never more than 3 or 4 feet deep. As a result, the woman got out of the boat to push it loose when she became stuck.

She was stuck up to her waist. After her father was unable to pull her out, authorities were notified. Cannon says the two individuals were in an area that made it hard for search and rescue to find them.

They were located about three-quarters of a mile west of I-15.

Woman rescued should be fine

Once emergency personnel found them and was able to get the woman out, she was transported by ambulance to an area hospital to be treated for possible hypothermia. Other than that, Cannon says the woman should be fine.

Cannon says this type of incident usually happens once or twice a year. Cannon also told KSL that he has never heard of anyone dying in a situation like this. However, it does create risk.

According to Cannon, search and rescue has boats that can be used in as little as 1 or 2 inches of water. In this case, Cannon says they used a airboat to get out to them.

Cannon also says search and rescue was working well into Sunday night to get the boat unstuck.
