SOUTH JORDAN, Utah — A man wanted for questioning by West Jordan police for an alleged aggravated assault of a female was shot dead Thursday evening by South Jordan police.

According to the West Jordan Police Department, officers from its department responded to a call of an aggravated assault Thursday around 11 a.m. Police say that a female was being held against her will by a man with a handgun.

Police also said the female was able to get away from the suspect. The suspect was spotted by authorities near Jordan Landing chasing the female. Police started a pursuit but called it off a short time later due to safety concerns.

Later, the suspect was located a second time. Police started another pursuit. But it was also ended due to safety concerns.

Police said the suspect then threatened family members of the female with a handgun. Police located the suspect a third time and made contact with him.

However, the suspect fled a third time. But the tires on his vehicle were spiked. The suspect attempted to flee on foot before being shot by South Jordan police officers, according to police. The pursuit ended in the area of 11400 S. Redwood Road. According to a police press release, the suspect died at the scene.

A K9 officer, Maya, a 6 ½-year-old Belgian Malinois, with the West Jordan Police Department, also died during the incident.

Police said that the female and male were former co-workers.

On Friday, West Jordan police identified the victim as 25-year-old Zachary Tyler Alvarenga of West Jordan. A press release Friday by West Jordan police also states that eight officers fired their weapons at the suspect during Thursday evening’s incident – four from West Jordan police, two from South Jordan police and two from Unified Police.

The West Valley City Police Department is investigating the incident.
