Fatal car crash in Salt Lake City claims the life of a 36-year-old man

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department is investigating a fatal car crash involving a SUV and a motorcycle late Wednesday afternoon.

Police say the incident happened at 400 South West Temple. Police also say that the incident happened about 4:10 p.m.

According to a press release, Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown was in the area at the time of the accident and saw a significant disruption to traffic.

Once on scene, Brown began blocking traffic, notified dispatch of the crash and called for medical assistance.

The motorcyclist, who has been identified as 36-year-old Josue Vega, died at the scene, according to police. 

According to the police investigation, the motorcyclist was driving at high rate of speed southbound on West Temple when he struck the SUV. Based on witness statements, police think that the victim was trying to beat a yellow light. 

The driver of the SUV was traveling northbound on West Temple and was attempting to turn west onto 400 South. The driver of the SUV remained on scene and cooperated with authorities throughout the investigation.

Due to the fatal car crash, 400 South was closed from Main Street to 200 West. West Temple was closed from 300 South to 500 South.
