ST. GEORGE, Utah — The city of St. George along with the Utah Department of Transportation opened the Bluff Street Pedestrian Tunnel Friday in southern Utah.

The new tunnel will provide pedestrians and bicyclists with a safer way to cross Bluff Street.

“In St. George, walking and biking are not niche activities or sports,” said St. George Mayor Michele Randall in a news release. “They are integral pieces of our transportation system.”

The opening of the tunnel was featured with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Additionally, the Southern Utah Bicycle Alliance held a community bike ride to make the pedestrian tunnel officially open.

The new tunnel crosses Bluff Street in the area between the southbound ramps of I-15 and Main Street. The tunnel also connects the east and west sides of the Hilton Drive Trail. It also helps with the connections to the region’s trail network.

“Our mission is to enhance quality of life through transportation by helping people get where they want to go, in the way they want to get there,” said Monte Aldridge, UDOT Region Four director in a news release. “This new pedestrian tunnel helps connect the community and boosts the economy by making it easier for people to get around by walking and biking.”
