SALT LAKE CITY– Another water bill is going through the Utah Legislature addressing a limitation of water usage in the Great Salt Lake Basin.

The bill before lawmakers this week would penalize people who water their lawns when they aren’t supposed to.

This bill, if passed, would be restricting water usage in the Great Salt Lake Basin in the times before May 1 and after Oct. 1 to aid the restoration the Great Salt Lake to healthy levels.

According to the bill, those who end up watering their lawn or turf in violation of the rules will receive a first citation with a $45 dollar fine. If another citation occurs in the same calendar year, the original fine would double.

This bill’s fines and citations exempt golf courses, schools, and other “public benefit properties.”

House Bill 538 is just one of many bills related to the Great Salt Lake to be considered as part of the 2023 Legislative Session.
