Utah Tech University looking at possible degree program cuts

SALT LAKE CITY — The Spanish, American Sign Language and theatre programs could soon leave Utah Tech University.
The school announced possible program cuts and reinvestments to comply with Utah’s new Higher Education Strategic Reinvestment law, which goes into effect on Wednesday. All state-funded schools are having these same conversations.

Overall, the school has found over $2.7 million that they are looking to reinvest in programs like marketing, psychology, engineering and film.
Paul Morris, vice president of administrative affairs, said they found more money to reinvest than the new law requires.
“The total we’ve come up with here is $2,729,000, and the target is $2,550,000.”
According to Morris, some of the departments could look different as a result of the cuts.
“A merge of the College of Arts and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. This would be a discontinuation of the College of Arts dean and administrative staff positions.”
Morris said the school is leaving room for the president and cabinet to make changes or recommendations and that they will submit their preliminary plan to the Utah Board of Higher Education this week.
