SALT LAKE CITY – Are you seeing ants all over your grass? You’re not alone. The very first question Taun and Maria answered on the KSL Greenhouse show last week was how to get rid of ants in the grass.

Getting rid of ants can be difficult. The simplest method you can try is by using the Raid or Black Flag sprays. However, you need to kill the queen in order to stop the colony from growing.

“The next step is to find something that they like to feed on. With fall coming, they’re much more likely to feed on baits than they would in the spring because they’re trying to store energy and nutrients to survive the winter,” Taun said.

Depending on the species, ants will typically take either sugar or fatty based baits.

“You will have to set those somewhere near the nest and watch to see if they prefer one over the other,” Taun said.

Once the toxins in these baits make it into the nest, it can take from a week to about 10 days to kill the queen.

It’s not entirely necessary to get rid of ants in the grass, though. Taun recommends killing them only if they’re a nuisance because they can actually be beneficial.

“They sometimes are predators. They will feed on a whole list of different things,” he said.

That doesn’t mean all ants are good ants. Be on the lookout for ant species that live and feed on any rotting wood in your home.
