KEARNS, Utah — Fire destroyed the top four units of the Carrington Square Apartments in Kearns on Monday afternoon. The American Red Cross also reported the Kearns apartment fire also created water damage from the firefighting efforts, impacting all 12 units in the building.
The Taylorsville Unified Fire Authority said the fire started on the top floor.
It took them about one-half hour to douse the flames.
The entire building is undergoing exterior renovation, leading fire officials to believe the cause is construction-related.
Irene Frissley was working from home, in the building, when the fire started.“I looked outside and saw a firetruck show up, and thought ‘maybe I should put on some pants,'” she told KSL NewsRadio. “So I put on some pants. Right when I was putting on my sweatshirt the police opened the door and said ‘get out, get out, get out.'”
UPDATE: Officials now say that four apartments, a total of 10 people were displaced but that they evacuated all 24 units. The Red Cross is helping them, as is the property management company, Bach Homes. They hired out the construction work on the exterior. https://t.co/J6umgyCrkd

By late Monday afternoon, the American Red Cross said that 34 residents had been displaced by the fire.
Representatives of the agency said it will not open a shelter in response to this fire, citing nearby housing options and options provided by the property manager.
