Brace for construction delays during Labor Day getaway

Construction in Lehi.

SALT LAKE CITY — UDOT construction crews won’t be laboring this Labor Day weekend, but their construction zones will stay up and lead to delays.

Drivers won’t be alone on Utah freeways.

“Nobody wants to be stuck in traffic, but if you have to be, just remember that we’re all in it together and be the kind of driver you want others to be,” said UDOT Spokesman John Gleason.

He says I-15’s “Technology Corridor” through Lehi will keep its narrow lane splits through the holiday. I-70 near the US-89 junction in Sevier and Millard counties will be down to one lane each way.

“We’re doing a huge hydro-demolition project, reconstructing several of the bridges out there, 14 to be exact,” Gleason said.

Gleason says it’s easier and more efficient for crews to leave their construction zones up so they can return to work on Tuesday morning.

Delays could reach 30 minutes today, plus Friday and Monday afternoons.

There will also be a lot more cars on the road this holiday weekend. Triple-A has not done national travel forecasts for Labor Day since 2015, but, that year, 35 million people hit the roads all over the U.S. This year, that number is expected to be significantly higher.

Triple-A of Utah Spokesman Michael Blasky says it’s the southern traffic that’s expected to be the worst. Either people will travel within the state, or go to southern Nevada or southern California. He says people need to check their batteries and tires, since those are two of the biggest reasons they get called out.
