Nearly 300 new cases of COVID-19 reported in Utah’s school-aged kids

SALT LAKE CITY — There are 1,274 new cases of COVID-19 the Utah Department of Health reported on Tuesday, and of those cases, 290 are among school-aged children (between the ages of 5 and 17). Specifically, 143 cases are among children ages 5-10, 72 cases were found in children ages 11-13, and 75 cases were reported in children ages 14-17.
These numbers represent the differences between totals reported on Wednesday, Sept. 14, and Tuesday, Sept. 13.
The new cases bring the statewide total to 485,466 positive cases of COVID-19 reported in Utah since the pandemic began.
In addition, the agency reported 581 Utahns hospitalized for COVID-19 on Tuesday. Another 13 Utahns died as the result of coronavirus.
Vaccines and risk assessment
More than 6,000 additional Utahns (6,133) received the COVID-19 vaccine in the latest UDOH numbers. To date, health officials in the state have administered 3,349,378 vaccine doses.
According to the health department, for the last 28 days, the risk of coming down with COVID-19 is 5.9 times greater for unvaccinated Utahns. For hospitalization, the risk to the unvaccinated is 6.8 times greater than that of vaccinated Utahns. And health officials report unvaccinated Utahns face a 5.1 times greater risk of death than vaccinated Utahns.
Rolling averages and trends
According to UDOH, the rolling 7-day average for positive COVID-19 tests in Utah is 1,626 per day.
Health officials report an increase of 8,559 Utahns tested for COVID-19 since the day before, and an increase of 15,424 tests performed.
That means the rolling 7-day average of people testing positive in Utah is 12.9%, and the rolling 7-day average of total positive test results is 9.6%.
Deaths in Utah
Health officials in Utah reported on Tuesday that 13 additional Utahns had died from COVID-19, with the majority of those (8) being between the ages of 65 and 84. One male over the age of 85 was included in the latest number of Utahns who’ve died of COVID-19, as were 3 people between the ages of 45 and 64.
One person, a young woman in Utah County who was hospitalized at the time of her death, was between the ages of 15 and 24.
How To Prevent the Spread of COVID-19 Coronavirus
COVID-19 coronavirus spreads person to person, similar to the common cold and the flu. So, to prevent it from spreading:
- Wash hands frequently and thoroughly, with soap and water, for at least 20 seconds.
- Don’t touch your face.
- Wear a mask to protect yourself and others per CDC recommendations.
- Keep children and those with compromised immune systems away from someone who is coughing or sneezing (in this instance, at least six feet).
- If there is an outbreak near you, practice social distancing (stay at home, instead of going to the movies, sports events, or other activities).
- Obtain a flu shot.
- Seek out the COVID-19 vaccine.
