PROVO CANYON, Utah — People are still climbing on avalanche debris near Bridal Veil Falls, even as the Utah County Sheriff’s Office warns against it.
The Sheriff’s Office worked to clear up some of the debris last week.
More than 10 feet of snow and ice are still left over on the road after a massive avalanche tore through the area last winter.
Sgt. Spencer Cannon of the Sheriff’s Office said most people aren’t aware of how that snow and ice are full of cracks and caverns that could break at any moment.
“If they [hikers] fall through, while they may not fall directly into the river anymore, they could still fall onto some pretty treacherous rocks,” he said.
Cannon suggests people who want to see the falls do so from the safety of the overlook.
“Seeing the demonstration or the result of nature is an interesting thing to see,” Cannon said. “But we would really like people to do it from a distance.”
According to Cannon, it will probably take until the end of June before the Sheriff’s Office can start the clean-up.
