Truck strikes power line causing power outages, fires in West Valley City

Police say a truck dumping a load of dirt Wednesday evening in the area of 1200 W. 3300 South struck a power line, causing power outages and a few fires in West Valley City. Photo credit: West Valley City police.
WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — West Valley Police said a truck dumping a load of dirt struck a power line early Wednesday evening causing power outages and a few small fires in the area.
According to a series of tweets from the WVCPD, the truck was working in the area of 1200 West 3300 South when it made contact with the power line. The contact toppled a power pole causing a few fires along the Jordan River Trail.
Heavy smoke also accompanied the fires. Smoke could be smelled near the Gateway Mall and was thick along SR-201.
Fire and power crews arrived on scene to put out the fires and to restore power. There was no mention of how many individuals are impacted by the power outages, or how long it would take to restore power.
Police also cautioned motorists to avoid the area as repairs were being made.
