LOGAN, Utah — A mountain lion that caused a stir on the USU campus in Logan on Tuesday morning was in the custody of the Utah Department of Natural Resources by the afternoon.
The mountain lion was first spotted on the USU campus, lounging in a tree near the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
At that point, officials issued a precautionary alert to the college and nearly Hillcrest Elementary School.
The animal was about 4 feet long. An adult mountain lion can grow up to nine feet in length.
The initial advice, said Logan City Police Chief Jeff Simmons, was to just avoid the animal.
“The best course of action is just to avoid them,” Simmons told KSL NewsRadio. “Hopefully this animal will just find its way up into the hills again.”
Logan City police said the lion tired of the spectators and ran north, away from campus.
It eventually made it to the backyard of a private home where a Department of Natural Resources biologist tranquilized the animal.
Police said at that point, the animal was removed into the department’s care.
