SALT LAKE CITY — I’m a Philadelphia Eagles fan and my team boasts some of the ugliest, nastiest sports fans in the world. They’ll boo their heroes on a bad day.
The NFL season’s been over for three months — and they’re still angry.
I contrast this with everyone around me here in Utah. For instance, after BYU lost in the first round of March Madness. It was a true flameout. In the newsroom, everybody shook their heads and shuffled back to work. An hour later, they were talking about next year.
These are just two ways of expressing your support. Love and forgiveness verses what I expect: seething anger and raw fury. And what a new study shows is that Utah… you’re the best.
A survey by the Promo Guy Website shows that after a bad game — of all the fan bases in America –Utahns rank 4th in getting over it. Getting on with life.
On average it takes a Utahn 30 minutes to shake it off and say “Better luck next week. Or next year.” We rank 4th at shedding the negativity. 30 minutes! Nationally, it takes an average of two hours and 30 minutes to stop seething.
In West Virginia, it takes a typical fan 17 hours to calm down.
So congratulations Utah.
I mean, look at the Jazz — they just suffered an epic losing street and still managed to pack the Delta Center, proving you’re passionate and much more forgiving than the average American. Which is way better than living in a perpetual state of anguish.
Like I do. And those are Eagles Fans. Ugh.
