SALT LAKE CITY — A new Tinder feature, “Share My Date” hopes to increase dating safety. Staying safe while online dating is top-of-mind for app users and lawmakers alike.
The new Tinder feature allows users to send their date’s picture to family and friends. Additionally, users can share their meetup information and add notes that people can access through a link.
Other apps have already put safety measures in place. Match.com has a system in place that alerts emergency contacts if a date is going badly. Also, Utah lawmakers are actively working on legislation that will increase accountability for dating apps.
Utah State University Senior Nicole Griggs said safety features are necessary.
“I think it’s amazing and great and [it] does help me kind of take a sigh of relief. But personally, I’m going to take my own precautions,” said Griggs.
Even with the added features, Griggs said she always meets her date in a public location. She also keeps in contact with friends throughout the date.
“I feel like it’s harder to understand how good a person is online rather than in person,” she said.
