SALT LAKE CITY- Tech giant Amazon says they will be adding 1,500 new jobs in Utah as part of a nationwide hiring spree.

The company says that they are looking to fill a variety of full and part-time jobs in the Salt Lake County area that includes things like packing customer orders, to shipping and logistics.

“People – they are not traveling, or eating out as much. But they are shopping and they are spending, and going to places like Amazon. And Amazon definitely needs more employees,” Nate McDonald, spokesman for the Utah Department of Workforce Services told KSL NewsRadio.

“These are opportunities for people. It may not be in the industry they have worked, but it is a job and an opportunity for them. Especially if their unemployment is about to exhaust,” he says.

Dave Clark, Amazon’s senior vice president of worldwide operations said the addition of 100,000 jobs across the country is needed and will be done safely.

“Our expansion also comes with an unwavering commitment to safety. Collectively, our new team members have already completed more than 1,200,000 hours of safety training, with over 500,000 more hours expected, to ensure that in addition to fast and efficient delivery for our customers, we’re providing a safe and modern environment for our employees and partners.

“We are proud to be hiring 100,000 new associates with pay of $15 per hour or more across those buildings and in our network,” he said in a statement on Monday.

This latest round of hiring comes just 3 months after Amazon hired another 1,500 new full-time positions ahead of the launch of their newest fulfillment center in West Jordan.
