SALT LAKE CITY — Hundreds gathered at on the lawn of the A. Ray Olpin Student Union building at the University of Utah on Wednesday night with a message to be 22% better in honor of a slain football player and student.

They gathered to mourn and celebrate the life of Aaron Lowe, who was shot and killed last weekend.

Be 22% better: “That’s what Aaron would do”

Coaches, administrators and teammates all spoke about Lowe as a giving person.

Fellow player Clark Phillips said he was grateful for the time he spent with Aaron.

“If you see someone hurting, go tell them that you love them.  Give them a hug.  Cuz that’s what Aaron would do,” Phillips said.

Kyle Whittingham, head coach of Utah’s football team, said it was a privilege to coach Lowe.  And he also compared Aaron Lowe to another football player, Ty Jordan, who died in a shooting last December.

“His smile, his personality, just like one of his best friends, Ty Jordan, lit up the room anytime he came into a room,” Whittingham said.

Lowe and Jordan were not only best friends; they wore the same jersey number, 22. The theme of last night’s vigil was for everyone to be 22% better.

“I hope we remember him and honor him by doing what we can both individually and collectively as a university community by being better for him — 22% better for him,” said University of Utah President Taylor Randall.

One football player commented if the team continues to work hard in Lowe’s memory, the Utes could hold a trophy at the end of the season.
