SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah — A three-car accident Saturday morning in Summit County resulted in the death of a male pedestrian. It also led to a significant drug bust.

According to authorities, the accident occurred just after 9 a.m. A black BMW was driving northbound on SR-224 at the intersection of Ute Blvd. The BMW hit a Honda Crosstour in the intersection. It is still under investigation if the BMW driver ran a red light.

The BMW then proceeded to go up onto the raised divider where it hit the male pedestrian, who was panhandling at the time. The victim has been identified as Chad Daines, 56, of Phoenix, Arizona.

Daines was transported to an area hospital in critical condition, but he passed away later from his injuries.

After hitting Daines, the BMW continued into oncoming southbound traffic. Eventually, it collided with a white Hyundai Tucson, whose driver fled the scene.

Upon investigation by authorities, it was discovered the Hyundai was carrying a large amount of raw marijuana. Authorities seized roughly 208 pounds of raw marijuana.

The driver of the Hyundai, who has been identified as Darrell C. Gutierrez, 48, of Grand Prairie, Texas, was eventually arrested and booked into the Summit County Jail under investigation for drug charges.

The investigation of the crash is still ongoing.
