SALT LAKE CITY — Don’t be fooled by the warm temperatures in the valleys, the mountains and canyons are covered in snow and nearly all of Utah’s ski resorts are open.

Ski Utah Communications Director Alison Palmintere told KSL NewsRadio that after this weekend there will only be one resort in Utah that is not at least partially open.

“Our resorts do tend to open right around Thanksgiving, sometimes before if we’re lucky. And they’ll slowly open terrain as they’re able to,” she said.

But how is that possible with such warm temperatures?

Palmintere says it’s easy to forget there’s a significant temperature difference between the valleys and the canyons, where resorts are located.

“It does tend to be quite cooler there and resorts are able to make snow,” she said. “More and more resorts are opening every day. So I just encourage guests to check [with] their local resorts to see what is and isn’t open,” she said.

Palmintere also said some resorts have free ski passes for younger kids.

Fourth, fifth and sixth graders can get a Ski Utah Passport. The passport will give them three days at each of Utah’s 15 resorts for $89.

“Definitely a way to get your kids out on the slopes for an affordable price.”
