SALT LAKE CITY — The Gateway is looking for artists to fill empty storefront windows as part of its Art Shop Project.

“Each spring, we are so excited to offer this opportunity for local artists to gain exposure and experience a unique platform to showcase their art,” said Kenzie McFarlane, the marketing manager for The Gateway wrote in a statement.

The Art Shop Project highlights local artists seasonally, according to The Gateway’s website. It allows artists to decorate empty storefronts that would otherwise sit dark.

Art Shop Project theme

This year’s theme is “Upcycle Utah.”

When creating their proposal, artists are expected to draw inspiration from Utah’s landscapes. Additionally, all of the works must be made from recycled materials. For example, materials such as plastics, glass, and electronics must be used.

The press release said that artists of all mediums and styles are welcome to apply.

Given the timing of the Art Shop Project’s April launch, we felt this year’s Upcycle Utah theme is perfectly compatible with Earth Day,” said McFarlane.

The deadline for artists to submit proposals is April 1. More information can be found by visiting the project’s website.

The projects that are chosen for display will be featured at The Gateway throughout the summer. Each artist’s name and statement will be placed next to their work, according to the press release.

Additionally, the displays will be highlighted during Art Strolls. The events are scheduled to take place on April 19, May 17, June 21, and July 19 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
