SALT LAKE CITY — A new report shows more than a third of driver’s license tests in Utah were flunked.

Looking at data reported by individual states, USA Today found that 36.2% of Utah residents failed their driver’s license tests at some point. That is just slightly higher than the national average of 34.7%

However, Nick VinZant with USA Today BluePrint Car Insurance says Utahns might just need to study a little harder.

“Utah, actually, has very high rate of passing the skills portion of the exam,” VinZant said. “Ninety-two percent of people in Utah passed the skills portion. Only 62% though passed the knowledge portion.”

Related: Utah law prohibiting new drivers from having friends in the car could soon change

That means only 8% failed the driving portion.

Utah was ranked 13th highest for most failed tests in the nation.

Meanwhile, Wyoming, Missouri and Indiana topped that list, with more than half of their drivers failing the test.

What you have to do to pass Utah driver’s license tests

As hinted above, Utah not only requires you to pass a written test but a skills, or real-life test, too.

The state’s website says the purpose of the driving skills test is such:

“The driving skills test evaluates driving behaviors, demonstrating that you possess the basic skills, knowledge, and abilities to safely maneuver a vehicle in compliance with Utah State Traffic Rules and Regulations and generally accepted safe driving practices.”

This includes being able to understand the language used on the traffic and direction sights, and that you’re able to follow simply instructions, as well.

Keep in mind you have to pay to take the Utah driver’s license test.

If you fail the test, you’ll have to try again another day. If you fail three times, you’ll have to pay another fee.

Overall, you have six months from the time you pay your initial fee to take the test.

Don’t forget to buckle your seatbelt.

We want to hear from you.
