We’re all familiar with first aid – you can bandage a scrape, clean a cut, or know to take someone to the hospital with a broken arm. But what if you see or know someone going through a mental health crisis like having a panic attack or a friend tells you they’re depressed?
Utah State University teaches a Mental Health First Aid class to help community members know what to do in a mental health crisis, much like a CPR training so you could help someone in need.
Mental Health First Aid prepares participants to interact with a person in crisis and connect them with help. They offer concrete tools and answer key questions like “What do I do?” and “Where can someone find help?” so that you can feel confident if the situation ever arises. They also introduce participants to key risk factors and warning signs of mental health programs, build an understanding of their impact, and review appropriate supports.
